Five paratroopers who just returned from 15 months in Iraq were in the spotlight Thursday for their heroic actions in combat.

The soldiers, who are members of 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, were awarded Silver Star medals at a homecoming event for the entire squadron at an off-post site near Fort Bragg, N.C.

The soldiers receiving the Army’s third-highest award for gallantry and valor in combat are:

• Spc. Andrew Harriman, a platoon medic with C Troop.

• Spc. Jeremiah Church, a reconnaissance platoon machine gunner.

• Sgt. Justin Young, a squad leader with C Troop.

• 1st Sgt. John Croomer of C Troop.

• Capt. Stephen Dobbins, commander of B Troop.

The Silver Stars were awarded by Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, who commanded the 82nd Airborne when the 5-73 Cav was stood up from scratch and activated in January 2006.

The squadron deployed just eight months after that, spending more than half its time in existence in combat.
