About 8 years after passing the 3,000K mark, Col. Butters of the 125th “Tulsa Vipers” FS now joins a select club of six other pilots who accumulated more than 4,000 flight hours in the F-16.

F-16.net would like to congratulate Col. Butters (and his crew) for this wonderful achievement.

Profile in Heroism; Medal of Honor Recipient, Silvestre Herrera

By Sgt. Benjamin Cossel
Operation Jump Start – Arizona Public Affairs

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Combat – the ultimate proving ground where service members put to test their years of training. Fear – the natural reaction to unnatural situations where the mind tells the body to go into survival mode and flee. Courage – the mind ignoring its natural reactions and pushing forward in the face of certain disaster.

On the morning of March 15, 1945, near the village of Mertzwiller, France, a young private first class with the Texas National Guard’s 36th Division was faced with all three; combat, fear, and overwhelming courage when his platoon came under a heavy machine-gun attack. Mexican-born Silvestre Herrera faced down his fear and the enemy when he charged the source of the rifle fire, suppressing the German assault, and allowing his platoon to continue.

Later that same day, Herrera would walk through a minefield drawing deadly rounds away from their intended mark. He lost both his legs in the engagement, all the while keeping his M-1 Garand Rifle trained on the source stronghold thereby allowing his brothers-in-arms to flank and overrun the enemy position.

For his actions, Herrera was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. But that is just the beginning of the story…

secretary gates finely got on the “Airforce”to take a bigger part in the war. they should control the air. iraq does not have an airforce. we have smart bombs unmaned preditors for surveillance. all kinds of modern equipment. the airforce if used to full strength should be able to shorten the war in months.

Sergeant First Class Shughart, United States Army, distinguished himself by actions above and beyond the call of duty on 3 October 1993, while serving as a Sniper Team Member, United States Army Special Operations Command with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Sergeant First Class Shughart provided precision sniper fires from the lead helicopter during an assault on a building and at two helicopter crash sites, while subjected to intense automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fires. While providing critical suppressive fires at the second crash site, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader learned that ground forces were not immediately available to secure the site. Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader unhesitatingly volunteered to be inserted to protect the four critically wounded personnel, despite being well aware of the growing number of enemy personnel closing in on the site.
After their third request to be inserted, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader received permission to perform this volunteer mission. When debris and enemy ground fires at the site caused them to abort the first attempt, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader were inserted one hundred meters south of the crash site. Equipped with only his sniper rifle and a pistol, Sergeant First Class Shughart and his team leader, while under intense small arms fire from the enemy, fought their way through a dense maze of shanties and shacks to reach the critically injured crew members.
Sergeant First Class Shughart pulled the pilot and the other crew members from the aircraft, establishing a perimeter which placed him and his fellow sniper in the most vulnerable position. Sergeant First Class Shughart used his long range rifle and side arm to kill an undetermined number of attackers while traveling the perimeter, protecting the downed crew. Sergeant First Class Shughart continued his protective fire until he depleted his ammunition and was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot’s life. Sergeant First Class Shughart’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest standards of military service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army.

navy sealMarc Alan Lee, who died when he stepped into enemy fire to defend his buddies in Ramadi, is the first Navy SEAL to die in Iraq. The Navy group is among the most elite and secretive forces in the U.S. military. Lee overcame hellish training and pneumonia to become a SEAL. He was brawny and boastful but spoke openly of his love of God and family.

SGT.EVAN WAS THE LEADER OF A SNIPER TEAM IN BAGHDAD. THERE “HIDE” WAS DISCOVERED BY A IRAQI MAN. THEY WERE IN AN AREA CONTROLLED BY THE AL-QUIDA. THE MAN WAS CAPTURED, BUT CONTINUED TO MAKE A LOT OF NOISE. THE TEAM WAS IN FEAR OF BEING DISCOVERED. SIMILAR TO MARCUS LUTTRELL THE NAVY SEAL TEAMS THAT IN THE SAME POSITION THE SEALS LET THE YOUNG BOY GO, WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF 3 OUT OF 4 OF THE SEAL TEAM AND 16 MEMBERS OF A SPECIAL FORCES TEAM IN A HELICOPER THAT  WAS COMING TO RESCUE THEM. IN LUTTRELL BOOK “LONE SUVIVIOR  ” HE DESCRIBED THIS AS DEATH BY RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. IN SGT VELA’S CASE  HIS LEADER SAID THAT THE SAFTY OF THE TEAM WAS IN DANGER AND ORDERED SGT. VELA TO SHOOT THE MAN WHICH HE DID. THE TEAM RETURNED TO BASE ALIVE. SGT. VELA IS SERVING 10YRS FOR MURDER!! WHAT A DISGRACE!  WAS SGT. VELA HUNG OUT TO DRY TO APPEASE IRAQI “ALLIES”"  THE TRIAL WAS HELD IN IRAQ NOT IN THE STATES LIKE ALL OTHERS. THIS IS WHAT STINKS!!

Well, gang, it’s time for the Gentlemanbeggar to take a little break from posting.  Today I offer up #100 plus a little something extra! And now, breaking from my usual rules a little, I fudged some and removed two characters for this one. It seemed a fitting way to mark this milestone… [...]
